1964 - 1967 GTOs
The first generation GTO was an optional performance package for the luxury-trimmed Tempest LeMans.
This intermediate-sized muscle car followed a downsizing trend lead by the Ford Fairlane, Plymouth Sport Fury, and Dodge Polara. With a "Coke-bottle" restyling of much of the 1966 Pontiac line, the GTO finally became its own model. All GTOs from this era are highly prized, especially convertibles and cars equipped with Tri-Power carburetion (last available in 1967). The earliest Gen-1 GTOs suffered criticism for slow steering and poor brakes, but they were significantly improved by 1967. |
